Hey, so I'm moving into my new apartment this afternoon and then I think I might go to the animal shelter later. I really want a dog. I've been thinking about it for months.
I have a couple of questions for you, before I pull the trigger, though.
1. You wanna come with? and 2. If something happens to me or if I get ported out...would you take the dog? I mean, would you take care of him/her until I can again? It's ok if you want to say no, but you're the first person that came to mind.
[ Because he thinks Vanya would be a perfect dog person if she trusted herself enough to try and he thinks she's the type that would think that she'd be bad at it but would actually be amazing because a dog would give her all the unconditional love she's deserved forever but she makes him think she feels like she's missing. ]
I'll show you, Vanya. I'm not just going to leave you hanging like that, if you agree. It's okay if you don't want to but I think you'd be really good at it.
[She hates responses like that, but she sends it before she can even realize it. Then she has to roll her eyes at herself, and quickly add:] I mean, why do you think that?
Yeah. Once you learn the basics, all you really have to do is feed them, let them out to go to the bathroom, and love them. You could do that, I bet. Dogs are pretty easy to love because they love their people, too. It's an easy reciprocal.
[There are about a million doubts going through her head - how does he know she could do that, love seems like it's probably important and that happens to be an arena she has severe doubts about herself in - and though she contemplates writing them down she dismisses it pretty quickly. She doesn't know how, and she doesn't really want to put something that nebulous and vulnerable out there without knowing what might come of it.
So there's a short pause, before she decides to try and take it as a compliment so she stops spiraling with her doubt.]
You're amazing, thank you! I owe you one. Big one.
I'll text you in a couple of hours when Diego and I are done moving my shit and then I'll meet you at the porter and we can go?
[ Derek's convinced that if Vanya gets to be a part of the selection process, she'll fall in love with the dog just as much as he will and then she won't be so worried; she'll be more excited. Like he is. Whether that'll work or not, who knows, but that's what Derek's sort of banking on. ]
[Okay well that is a thing she does not know what to do with, no one has ever said that to her before, not even facetiously. If this was in person, she'd just shrug and be awkward, and since she already sent the dumb smilie she can't send another. Vanya doesn't respond, because being awkward in a text is somehow way harder.]

Me? I don't know how to take care of a dog
[Which is not a no, but she's too bewildered to refuse.]
