The whole diner seems so much smaller and shabbier than before: Luther can notice the rips in the red-vinyl seats, the sticky patches on the floor, the stains on the booth tables. But the smell rockets him right back to the past as if the intervening years hadn’t happened: tar-black diner coffee, sweet confectioner’s sugar, fresh-baked donuts, sizzling bacon from the kitchen. Their feet swinging from the diner stools, not even reaching the floor—
He hadn’t ever thought he’d return with Vanya alone — that irreparable rift in the family ran too wide and too deep — but with Luther’s faith in their father shaken, there’s an opportunity. The promise of pancakes is small, inoffensive, safe. It’s not Mom’s pancakes either (those quiet hours with them tiptoeing down the stairs to the kitchen, voices hushed, children out of bed), but it’ll have to do.
When leaving the empty house, he still instinctively tiptoed across the foyer. Old habits die hard.
He’d crammed himself into the taxi (one of their brothers had borrowed dad’s car, he has no idea who and doesn’t much care anymore) and made it over quickly, so he’s already there, nursing a cup of coffee and trying to sober up by the time Vanya arrives. When the bell above the door chimes, Luther shoots a look at her slinking her way in. He can’t quite decide what to do with his expression; doesn’t smile to greet her, but doesn’t scowl either. He schools it into a wary nod instead, clutching a cup of coffee dwarfed by his hand. The other one half-rises in an awkward almost-wave, an acknowledgment of her presence.

The effort doesn't really help, and when she gets out of the taxi, she finds herself hesitating outside.

He sighs and scrubs a hand down his face, dropping the phone, face down on his chest. This really shouldn't be hard, should it? She's his sister. And yet.... It's still another ten or fifteen minutes before he picks the phone up again. Vanya's picture still stares at him and he huffs, annoyed at himself for making this such a big deal and punches the little message symbol a little harder than necessary. ....And then he's frozen again, staring at a stupid, blinking cursor, waiting for him to type. Something. Anything. This shouldn't be hard. He forces himself to stop thinking and just lets his thumbs move across the letters and before he has time to look at it, re-read it, re-think it, delete it all, he hits send. Too late. [A day is not long enough, but to be fair, Vanya has become a pro at holding a grudge without even realizing she's holding one. Is it against Derek, Diego? Who knows! Certainly not Vanya.]

But Diego had taken him to task for it, and that avoidance hadn't sat right with Luther either. He was supposed to be the leader. He was supposed to be handling things, not running away from them. And the fact that they've survived a few family gettogethers now (even if it was aloof and walking careful circles around each other), and apparently Thanksgiving is supposed to mean reflecting on your entire past year and self-examining. It's left him thinking since then, and so he finally works up the courage and— ]

| | The news of Klaus being gone was...rougher than Diego might have expected. He hasn't been in a good place with Klaus for awhile now, their last fight fell into really awful territory, especially toward the end, and he hadn't really taken the time to start fixing anything with him. Diego just assumed there would be more time, they were in the last world for months... he thought it would be the same here. But maybe the incident is good for the relationships he has (or doesn't have) with the rest of his siblings, because the whole thing really spurs him into action. Particularly, with Vanya. They have made plans of watching a movie together repeatedly at this point and it still hasn't happened. Well, tonight it is. Diego has decided, and he's set everything up fora movie night: Nearly a dozen movies, all of varying years and genres; popcorn and other essential movie-snacks; and a bottle of tequila. He hopes she either likes tequila or has her own alcohol of choice on hand. That evening, he shows up with everything and knocks on her apartment door. |
